Wheelie Bin compost toilets

Fri, 05/20/2016 - 14:48 — Compost Stu

Wheelie bins have long been used as an alternative innovative composting toilet solution. I first saw a wheelie bin system used en masse at a music festival on Stradbroke Island. The system worked well in a practical sense, although olfactory sensations would deny that it was a complete success. The pong by the third day was immeasurable, and many punters were put off using the loos altogether.

FLOUT

Sun, 01/03/2016 - 08:59 — Compost Stu

Pooh Solutions supply the latest technology in dosing systems. The FLOUT (Floating outlet) is a simple reliable device designed to deliver a pre-determined volume of effluent to a land application area, thereby soaking the area and eliminating "creep failure" associated with standard septic overflow rates. The result of this intermittent wetting and drying cycle in the land application area is increased de-nitrification in the soil beneath the system, thereby lowering the amount of total N entering the water table. FLOUTS are available from Pooh Solutions for $185 plus p & h.

Birthday musings

Sat, 12/12/2015 - 09:41 — Compost Stu

Today is my birthday and I have spent it helping an Irish film crew shoot a series about wwoofing on my farm at Barkers Vale. They are promoting the Irish indigenous language (Gaelic) and much of the conversation is in Gaelic. It sounds great, like a cross between Dutch and Swedish. One of the most interesting scenes was the “emptying the compost toilet” scene, where the main presenter point blank refuses to have anything to do with the job, whilst her male counterpart tries to coax her and bribe her to have a go.

New Thunderloo 1200

Tue, 12/01/2015 - 13:34 — Compost Stu

Check out our freshest pooh pic for a look at the latest slimline Thunderloo 1200. This Thunderloo was specifically built for installation where an existing floor level dictated the height of the chamber, so we simply excavated down to achieve our minimum chamber height requirement of 1200mm. However, with the site being close to a creek and on heavy soil, the liquid drain would need to be a one way flow affair to account for potential groundwater ingress during extremely wet periods, so we designed a special float valve using a ping pong ball to prevent ingress at times of flooding.
