Anaerobic decomposition

I knew a fellow once who had a property out west, in the outback. After driving past vast amounts of road kill (mostly kangaroo) for years, he decided to build a bio-reactor to produce methane from the carcasses. He simply dug a pit at the beginning of his long driveway, lined it with black plastic and covered it with black plastic. He connected a hose to the top of it and ran the line down to his house. When he drove anywhere he would throw the dead roos in the back of his ute and add them to the pit when he got home. The resultant gases rose through the tube and then bubbled through a plastic barrel full of sodium hydroxide. This cleaned the gas of most of the rubbish and then he used it to run his cookers and hot water system. I love the simplicity of the idea, though not sure about collecting the smelly dead roos and driving past the stink pit!
